story time wordofmouth

st
Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Once upon a time, two different sales professionals called on a locally owned window and door company. Each sales person received extremely rude rebukes and dismissive behavior from the business owner. Neither person knew each other, at the time, nor did they know of each persons experience until at one time, years later they were talking about the experience. At first it seemed a shock to Terri and me that we had been treated so rudely, yet upon discussing this we both came to the conclusion that our reactions to the business owners rudeness was pretty much dealt with by each of us in the same way. First of all never wanting to do business with them, and secondly letting everyone we know not to do business with them. Each of us had gone in there because we were potential customers. Needing to purchase windows and doors for home remodeling projects on our different sides of town. You see, most people will try to do business with businesses they know of or already do business with...even sales people. The moral of the story is that as a business owner, you have much more to gain by being nice to people, even if you don't do business with them, than you do to be rude. You lose much, much more than the two people you were rude to. It's probably not the "word of mouth" advertising you counted on.

Have you had a similar experience??? Add it to the blog...but don't name names; we don't want to encourage a law suit.
